Setyanto took a tertiary institution at the Telkom College of Technology (now Telkom University) from 1991 and was completed in 1995. He then underwent a S2 level at the Bandung College of Management from 2000 to 2002.

In June 2009, Setyanto served as Assistant Vice President of Business Portfolio & Financial Planning at Telkom. He held the position about 3 years until June 2012.

Various important positions in Telkom were then carried out, EVP Strategic Investment (2015-2019), VP Strategic Business Development (2012-2019).

From 2013 to 2019, Setyanto has also been the Commissioner of PT Telkom. In addition, he also holds a number of strategic positions in the Telkom Group.

The position is the President Commissioner at PT Jalin Payment of the Archipelago and Commissioner at PT Dayamitra Telekomunikasi (Mitratel).

As reported, Telkom and Singtel as Telkomsel's shareholders officially appointed Setyanto Hantoro as Telkomsel's President Director. Previously, the position was occupied by Emma Sri Martini who was then drawn to fill Pertamina's Director of Finance.
